Asthma is an inflammatory disease that makes breathing difficult and can make some physical activities difficult or even impossible.

Symptoms of Asthma

Types of asthma

Allergic asthma (extrinsic asthma)

Nonallergic asthma (intrinsic asthma)

This type of asthma triggers due to the irritants in the air like:

  • Cigarette smoke
  • Viral illnesses
  • Air pollution
  • Air fresheners
  • Perfumes

Occupational asthma

This type of asthma is triggered in the workplace like:

  • Dust
  • Dyes
  • Gases and fumes
  • Industrial chemicals
  • Animal proteins
  • Rubber latex

Aspirin Induced Asthma

This type of asthma is triggered by taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drug such as naproxen. The symptoms are visible within minutes or hours.

Cough-variant asthma (CVA)

It does not contain the traditional symptoms of asthma it is characterized by a dry cough. If not treated it can lead to full-blown asthma flares that include the other more common symptoms.

Asthma Diagnosis

There is no single way to test asthma your doctor will do a series of test to confirm the symptoms are due to asthma only these tests are as follows:

Health History: If you have a family background of shortening breathe then you have a high risk.

Physical Exam: The doctor will check the breathing with a stethoscope. The doctor will also perform allergies tests such as hives or eczema. Allergies increase the risk of asthma.

Breathing Test: Doctor perform a pulmonary function test to measure the airflow into the lungs

Causes of Asthma

Genetics: If your family has an asthma background then you will have more chances to have asthma.

History of viral infections: People having viral infection during childhood may likely to have the condition.

Hygiene hypothesis: This theory explains that babies are more likely to have asthma and allergies condition if do not have the right amount of exposure to the bacteria as a result their immune is not strong.

Treatment of asthma

Treatments for asthma fall into three primary categories:

  • Breathing exercises
  • Quick-acting treatments
  • Long-term asthma control medications

Breathing exercises

This exercise helps you to increase your capacity of air in your lung and cut down the asthma symptoms. The doctor will teach you breathing exercises for asthma.

Quick-relief asthma treatments

This medication should only be used in case of asthma attacks or any symptoms.

Long-term asthma control medications

It Includes:

Anti-Inflammatories: Prevent the production of the mucus and help to reduce the swelling in the airwaves which makes it easier to breathe. It is taken with the inhaler and corticosteroids.

Anticholinergics: It helps to stop the tightening of the mucus inside the around the airwaves. These are taken in combination with anti-inflammatories daily.

Long-acting bronchodilators: Used in combination with anti-inflammatory for asthma medication.

Biologic therapy drugs: It is a new medication method used to treat severe asthma.

Prevention of Asthma

Avoiding Triggers 

Avoid all the things like chemicals, smells products that have caused breathing problems in the past.

Reducing exposure to allergens 

Once you have identified your allergens such as dust and mold try to avoid them as best you can.

Getting allergy shots

Immunotherapy is the process to alter the immune system and with regular shots, your body may become less sensitive to any triggers you encounter.
