Studies have shown that millions of Americans are having a heart attack every year. It is also named as Myocardial Infraction.

Myocardial Infarction is a combination of two words “Myo” means muscles and “Cardinal”  means heart.

  • Drug Misuse: Misuse of the drug-like cocaine, amphetamines (speed), and methamphetamines (crystal meth) causes arteries to narrow and due to which oxy rich blood does not reach the heart.
  • Arrhythmia: Arrhythmia is irregular in the heartbeat. In this situation, the heart can beat fast or slow. There are two conditions one when the heart beats fast which is called tachycardia and the other where the heartbeats slow which is called bradycardia.
  • Angina: Angina is the chest pain that occurs when there is not enough blood going into your heart it is quite similar to the heart attack with squeezing of your chest. Its a sign of a heart disease and happens when arteries are blocked by something or there is not oxygen-rich blood in the heart.
  • Cardiomyopathy: Abnormal muscles unable to pump the blood to the rest of the body and this condition is called cardiomyopathy. Different types of cardiomyopathy are as follows:
    • Dilated (stretched and thinned muscle)
    • Hypertrophic (thickened heart muscle)

Complication: There are two types of complication that can occur during a heart attack they are as follows:

  • Immediate Complication:
    • Arrhythmias: Irregular heartbeat which is either to fast or slow.
    •  Cardiogenic Shock: Blood pressure drops suddenly of a person resulting in the pumping of less blood to the body to work properly.
    • Hypoxemia: Decrease in the percentage of oxygen in the blood.
    • Myocardial Rupture: Heart attacks damage the walls of the heart which increases the chances of heart wall ruptures.
  • Delay Complication:
    • Angina: Oxygen-rich blood does not reach the heart causing chest pain and another part of the body causing other complications.
    • Aneurysm: In this, the scars tissue builds on the damages walls of the heart which causes a blood clot which leads to low blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms.
    • Edema: In ankles and leg fluid are accumulated causing them to swell.

Diagnosis For Heart Attack

  • Blood Test: Cardiac enzymes are used to indicate heart muscle damage. These enzymes are present the heart cells but in case of the heart attacks these cells are damaged and enzymes spill into the bloodstream. Measuring these enzymes level doctors find the size of the attack and the time of the attack.
  • Echocardiography: This is an imaging process that can be used during and after the heart attack to see how the heart is pumping and what are not pumping the same they should. This also tells whether any parts of the heart is damaged or not.
  • Cardiac Catheterization: Cardiac catheterization provides the image of the blocked artery which helps the doctor to treat the patient. It is used in the first hour of the heart attack if the medication is not working.

Heart Attack Treatment

  • Drugs: Drugs help to treat heart attack as they break or prevent blood clots, stop platelets from collecting. It is recommended to take medicine as per the direction as soon as possible to prevent heart damage. Drugs which can be during a heart attack are as follows :
    • Aspirin, Plavix, Effient to stop blood clotting.
    • Thrombolytic therapy (“clot busters”) to dissolve blood clots in your heart’s arteries
  • Cardiac Catheterization: This process is used to open up the blocked arteries such as stent or angiography.
  • Dilated (stretched and thinned muscle)
  • Hypertrophic (thickened heart muscle)
  • Bypass Surgery: need for bypass surgery to restore the supply of the blood to the heart.
