Different Yogas and their benefits

A systematic practice of exercise, relaxation, breath control meditation to achieve harmony and peace in the body is called Yoga. Originated from ancient India it is one of the six schools of Hindu philosophical traditions. In the western world, the term yoga often denotes postures which are also called asanas and yoga as an exercise.

Yoga means “Union” is derived from the Sanskrit word “YUJ” means to attach and “YOKE”  means the harness. The word yoga is cognate with English “YOKE“.

According to the sources of Patanjali, the spiritual sense of the word yoga came in the early second half of the 1st millennium BCE and is associated with the philosophical system. 21 June every year is recognized as an international yoga day.


Yoga often uses the scenario of trees, branches with roots, trunks, etc. Each branch represents different characteristics and focus. These branches are as follows:

  • Hatha Yoga: Designed to prime the body and mind.
  • Raja Yoga: This involves strict meditation and strict adherence with a series of steps which is known as “Eight Limbs of Yoga”.
  • Karma Yoga: This aims to create a path for the future free of negativity and selflessness.
  • Bhakti Yoga: This aims to create a path for devotion, a positive way to control emotion, and handle acceptance and tolerance.
  • Jnana Yoga: This creates a path for the scholar and is all about wisdom and developing the intellect through study.
  • Tantra Yoga: This branch is all about the pathway of rituals, ceremonies, or consummation of a relationship.


Chakras meaning spinning wheel. The Chakras are the center point of energy, thoughts, feelings, and physical body which is maintained by a yoga. It determines all emotional reactions, desires or aversions, levels of confidence or fear, and even physical symptoms and effects that a person experience in reality.

Anxiety comes when the energy flow becomes blocked in the Chakra which creates a physical, mental, or emotional imbalances.

There are 7 in total chakras each of which focuses individually:

  • Sahasrara: Located at the crown head and white and violet represent its color. It represents the state of pure consciousness and physical death.
  • Ajna: It relates to the purity glands which is responsible for growth and development. Violet, deep blue, represents the color of this chakra but traditional yoga guru describes the color white.
  • Vishuddha: It represents the “especially pure” or “throat” chakra with the color red or blue defining the color. It involves emotions, compassion, tenderness, unconditional love, equilibrium, rejection, and wellbeing as complex issues.
  • Manipura: It represents the “jewel city” or “navel” chakra with yellow representing its color. All the practitioners link this chakra with the digestive system, as well as personal power, fear, anxiety, developing opinions, and building introverted personality.
  • Svadhishthana: It represents “one own base” or “pelvic” chakra which is home of reproductive organs and the adrenal gland.
  • Muladhara: It represents “root support” or “root chakra” which is the base of the spine in the coccygeal region. It contains all our needs like food, sleep, sex, fear, and survival.

Different types and styles of yoga may include:

  • Ashtanga Yoga: It includes 6 sequences of postures that are linked with every moment to breathe. It became popular in the 1970s and it is one of the ancient types of yoga techniques.
  • Bikram Yoga: It includes 26 poses and a sequence of 2 breathing exercises. It is also known as hot yoga.
  • Hatha Yoga: It is a generic type of yoga that teaches the physical postures. It is a general introduction to the basic yoga postures.
  • Iyengar Yoga: It is finding the correct alignment in each pose using different props available like blankets, block, straps, chairs.
  • Jivamukti Yoga: It emerged in 1984 which incorporated with the spiritual teaching and practices which focus on fast-paced flow. It means “liberation while living”.
  • Kripalu Yoga: It focuses on the practice of looking inward and teaches to know to accept and learn from the body. It includes gentle stretches followed by a series of individual poses.
  • Kundalini Yoga: It is a type of yoga that is focused on releasing pent-up energy.  It means coiled. It starts with chanting and ends with singing in between them it also includes pranayama and meditation focusing on creating a specific outcome.
  • Sivananda Yoga: It is based on the 5 point philosophy that maintains proper breathing, diet, exercise, and positive thinking.

Benefits Of Yoga

  • Improves Flexibility: The most obvious and most effective benefit of yoga is the improvement of flexibility. In the early days of yoga, one may not be able to touch the toes but as doing practice one will surely able to do that if we stick to that.
  • Increase Muscles strength: Yoga helps to develop strong muscles in the body. Strong muscles also protect us to prevent from back pain and arthritis.
  • Increase blood flow: Yoga helps to get the blood flowing specifically the exercises help us the blood flowing in hands and feet. Yoga also helps to get more oxygen to the cells. Poses like Headstand and Shoulderstand helps to flow the blood from legs to pelvis and then back to the heart.
  • Boost Immunity and Drains Lymphs: Yoga is all about stretching in and out in different postures by doing this it increases the drainage of lymph which help in fighting infection, destroy cancerous cells and dispose toxic waste product.
  • Lower Blood Sugar: It has been found that by doing yoga persons blood sugar decreases and also lowers the bad cholesterol and boost HDL.
  • Help to Sleep Deeper: If someone looking for relaxation from the hustle and bustle yoga is the answer to that. Asana likes Savasana, pranayama, and meditation help to calm the nervous system.
  • Keep Drug Free: By doing yoga daily one can easily fight with any kind of disease studies have shown that people doing yoga are healthy and ease free and it has also seen that people having asthma , high blood pressure is lowered by the help of yoga.
